A group of eleven students are now fully qualified to supervise gym sessions and help others on the road to achieving a healthier lifestyle, after successfully achieving their Active IQ Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing (Gym) qualification at Yorkshire Coast College.

Eight of the students are currently studying a full-time Sports & Exercise Level 3 at the College but have also completed the Fitness Instructing Certificate as a complimentary addition to their studies.

The students were all able to use the College’s sports facilities including Sports Hall and fully equipped Fitness Suite, as part of their course involved planning and delivering a 90 minute gym session for a client of their choice. The course also covered learning about the body’s anatomy and physiology as well as health & safety and professionalism at work and took place over 20 weeks, 1 day a week. The qualification will help students to obtain employment in the fitness industry.

Shane Read, 20, Sport & Exercise Sciences student, said "Since starting my YCC course, I have been offered lots of opportunities including getting my Fitness Instructing Certificate, which has enabled me to work part-time for the College's Fitness Suite team to get work experience. I will be going to Northumbria University to study Sports Development and Coaching, so I will hopefully be able to get work either on campus or at a local gym to supplement my degree studies."

Andy Ball, Sports teacher/lecturer at the College, said "This is the fifth time the College has run this very successful course. It is a great qualification to have - the students have all done very well as it is a rigorous process. Some students are already using their qualification within the industry."
