Engineering Intermediate & Advanced Apprenticeships

This Apprenticeship will develop the skills required to work within the Engineering sector. The range of job roles within the industry include Engineering Maintenance Technician, Electrical Engineer, Electronics Engineer, Engineering Operative, Marine Engineer, Mechanical Engineer, Motor Vehicle, Mechanic/Technician, Plater/Fabricator, Production Engineer, Sheet Metal Worker and Welder.

Apprenticeship duration

12 to 48 months

What will I study?

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Whilst studying an Apprenticeship you will work towards demonstrating your knowledge (at college) and competence (at work) in the following units:

Intermediate Apprenticeship units include:

  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Preparing and using Milling machines
  • Preparing and using Turning machines
  • Hand fitting techniques

Advanced Apprenticeship units include:

  • Engineering and environmental health and safety
  • Engineering organisational efficiency and improvement
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) techniques
  • Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming
  • Advanced Engineering Principles
  • Advanced Manufacture techniques CNC
  • Advanced Milling
  • Advanced Turning

FABRICATION AND WELDING

Whilst studying an Apprenticeship you will work towards demonstrating your knowledge (at college) and competence (at work) in the following units:

Intermediate Apprenticeship units include:

  • Working safely in an engineering environment
  • Carrying out engineering activities efficiently and effectively
  • Using and communicating technical information
  • Sheet metal/plating
  • Hand fitting techniques
  • Welding

Advanced Apprenticeship units include:

  • Engineering and environmental health and safety
  • Engineering organisational efficiency and improvement
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD) techniques
  • Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming
  • Advanced Engineering Principles
  • Advanced Sheetmetal/Platework Fabrications
  • Mig/Tig or MMA welding processes

How will I be assessed?

The course is assessed through observation, knowledge questions and the development of a portfolio of evidence to demonstrate competence. There is also a requirement to complete the following elements: employee rights and responsibilities workbook and personal learning and thinking skills.

Entry requirements:

GCSE Grade C (or equivalent) in Maths and English. Vocational Assessment required.

What next?

On successful completion of an Advanced Apprenticeship you could progress onto Higher Education to study for an NVQ Level 4, HNC/D in Engineering or study towards a degree. Soon Higher Apprenticeships in Engineering will also be on offer at Yorkshire Coast College.
